The Vision
The story is told that on day, about
five years ago, a young lady asked a favor of her uncle.
She needed help in buying books for school. She was a
student at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas.
The books cost $75.00, $100.00 and $150.00
respectively. The uncle thought that this was very high
for school books. As a result of this, he thought about
the widows, the single parent households and people on
fixed incomes. He wondered how they could send their children
to school to better themselves when all the money they
sent them went toward buying books. In talking to some
of his co-workers, he found that they were having the
same problems that he had encountered with his niece.
The Uncle thought that it would be great
if the Credit Union could help our membership in some
way to help our children get through college.
The Vision becomes a reality
The vision
was presented to the Board of Directors of the Local
24 Employees Federal Credit Union by Mr. Arlense Reese.
He stated that if the Credit Union could start a Scholarship
Fund, we would be able to help all of the children who
qualified form any household. He stated that education
means a lot to him because he only finished the 8th
grade. However in those days, that was as high as you
could go when you came from a country school. The teachers
taught us a lot in those days. Today things are much
harder for our children. That is why I have compassion
for education for our young people.
The Board of Directors readily agreed
with Mr. Reese and in the very same meeting a committee
was formed to begin the ground work for the scholarship
fund. Many names were submitted for the fund, but it was
agreed by all that since it was the vision of Mr. Reese
the scholarship fund would be named the Arlene Reese Scholarship
Fund.
Members on the committee include Mr.
Arlense Reese, Mrs. Ora Gibbs, Mr. Eddie Nickson, Mrs.
Alma Lattin and T.N. Roy.
The first money raising project of the
committee will be a raffle to be held August 9, 2005.
Giveaways will include a 20 inch Color TV, DVD/VCR Player,
and a portable CD player.
We are hoping that in January 2006, we
will be able to help some needy students to realize their
vision of going to school and not having to worry about
their “Books.”
Qualifications for applications will
be posted on our web site in the very near future.
